Major Indoor Pollutants and Its Effect

ItsThe Environment Protection Agency has identified more than 800 types of indoor pollutants of which 7 major indoor pollutants that results to severe environmental illness are listed below:-
1. Dust Mites
Dust mites are microscopic organisms that live and breed everywhere dust settles. They survive by eating funguses and skin scales and live up to 4 months. Each month, they lay up to 50 eggs!

If you have a million mites today, 25 days later will be 50 million mites.
~ Dr. Yadav, immunologist, SunndayStar, 16/03/03
A mattress contains 5 to 10 million dust mites, each releases 50 pellets of faeces within the mattress and upholstery, Imagine the amount of faeces in your room now!
Dust mites cause more than 80% asthmatic cases in the country and the population can be controied by proper vacuuming.
~ Dr. Liam Chong Kin, Consultant Respiratory Physician at UMSC
Malaysia Institute for Medical Research reported that 1 in 5 children in Singapore have doctor diagnosed asthma.
Babies exposed to dust mites in their first year may develop a life long allergy of which there is no cure.
2. Second Hand Smoke
Research conducted in US, those who exposed to second hand smoke for long term suffered from lung damage equivalent to that of the 20 years smokers. Hong Kong has the higher rate of death from cancer among developing countries, followed closely by Singapore. This may be a resultOf Second hand Smoke & indoor air pollution. ~Australian Institute of Healths, Welfare

3. Bacteria & Viruses
A Survey by Environement Protection Department shown 90% of offices are full of bacteria, causes respiratory infection, hypersensitivity and intoxification. Examples of air borne particles are such as SARS or pneumonia. A total of 8422 probable cases were reported and 916 people were killed from 29 countries in the short span of 8 months. Doctors and scientist have also stated a threatening fact that SARS could come back again anytime.

4. Gases
VOC are a class of carbon based chemicals, which evaporate at room temperature, giving off vapours that can be inhaled. Examples are Building Materials (eg. parquetry floor, paints, lacquer & varnishes) and cleaning products (eg. floor cleaners, dish/clothes detergen, pest spray & new clothings) All these emit harmful VOC. VOC may cause headache, impair thinking & concentration resulting in mental fatigue & confusion.
The worst situation is that it could cause cancer.
Studies of office building in Asia found level of Formeldehyde (potential human carcinogen) were 100-1000 times the acceptable cancer risk.

5. Mold / Fungi
The impact of mold/fungi is now reported to be as serious as passive smoking.
"For Victoria household, bleaches account for 37% of cleaning agents ingested by children."
~ Dr. Peter Dingles, Murdoch University W.A.
6. Pollen
Pollen from plants can be allergen.
7. Allergens
From pets, is capable for being airborne for hours and easily carried on clothing leads to rhinitis and asthma.
